The raw data including the DOE design are shown below.
In most cases, these data are the average of three readings for each point. The data included in this file is the DOE relevant set. Each line is a test and each test represents forty five or more data points taken in a continuous hour to hour and a half time period. There are actually 10 individual DOE designs of 9 runs per design fo a total of 90 runs.
Nomenclature for this chart:
- D weight is delta weight increment in grams
- 42 in bb IF is the stock Athearn 42 inch blue box engine wheels
- 40 in NWSL SS is 40 inch diameter Northwest Short Line stainless steel wheels
- 42 in NWSL NS is 42 inch diameter nickel silver wheels
- motor specifications are measured values for each motor tested with no load other than the flywheels.
- Number is the motor list number of the test motor. There were more than sixty motors on the list.
- The speed is the 12 volt rpm determined with a laser tachometer. Each is the average of five readings.
- Torque and speed ratios are the motor’s relationship to a reference motor in the overall motor list.
- Current draw is the supply current for the 12 volt no load condition.
Nomenclature for this chart:
- Test data is the specific average of three readings for that parameter or the result of a combination of data, not all of with are listed here.
- PC is what is call the performance characteristic for the configuration. It is a global assessment from a number of points across the operating spectrum. It is defined here: https://www.llxlocomotives.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=365
- DB Force is the measured draw bar force. In some cases this value has been adjusted to match the maximum number of cars.
- #cars 2.5% is the maximum number of cars that the configuration would pull up the grade. The speed for this is usually near 1 SMPH
- 12 volt velocity is the engine only speed in SMPH on a level grade with the supply set at 12 Volts.
- Weight is of the configuration. This includes the weight increments in variable 2.
- #c/wt is the maximum number of cars divided by the configuration weight.
- DB/Wt is the draw bar force for the maximum number of cars divided by the configuration weight.
- 12 volt n car speed is the nominal train speed on a level grade, measured SMPH
- current is the supply current draw for the nominal train in the previous bullet
- 12 volt n car speed is the nominal train speed on a 2.5% grade, measured SMPH
- current is the supply current draw for the nominal train in the previous bullet
- 12 V EO 0% gr current is the supply current draw for the engine only speed on a level grade with the supply set to 12 Volts.
- 12 volt stall current is the supply current draw at 12 Volts when the drive wheels are forced to stop by a downward force.
- 12 V max DB current is the supply current draw for the maximum draw bar force measurement on a level grade with the supply set to 12 Volts. This is the maximum useful power current.
- EO 2.5% speed is the engine only speed in SMPH on a 2.5% grade with the supply set at 12 Volts.
- EO 2.5% current is the supply current draw for the engine only in the previous bullet
- Minimum Sust Velocity is the speed in SMPH that is the engine only minimum that will run continuously on a level grade. This is at a low supply Voltage. The Voltage level is the trigger, the speed is the result.
- Min SV current is the supply current draw for the engine only in the previous bullet
Subsequent charts have the same type data and the nomenclature will not be repeated.
